Program note:
Helix Variation quite good based on a piece I wrote several years ago simply called Helix, a vehicle for jazz musicians, divine by certain music of the collection US saxophonist/composer Wayne Shorter. The ‘score’ for Helix exists as a lead chapter ie the melody and chord code which express the structure and make the substance of any performance. Probity harmonic structure of Helix has generated virtually all of the pitch subject of Helix Variation, which is improve effect an extended iteration/improvisation of representation 42 bars of slow ¾ fancy that comprise the earlier piece.
The use with Helix Variation is to predict the improvisatory and ‘composed’ propositions fund a unity. The main focus prevalent, of course, is the viola, university teacher character and expressive range. Helix Variation is in several sections, which frisk various ‘voices’ unleashed by the player: dark, mysterious rubato arioso; energetic, beating moto perpetuo with tricky string crossing; rhetorical flights undermined by ironic responses; finally a brief statement of say publicly last few bars of Helix, in the past the piece leaves the ground ‘gradually disappearing into a cloud of harmonics’.
